The Candidates Forum last night was a great success. Thanks to all of you who came out to support CHCC. Remember, officer elections will be held on June 5 and we need your help to get the word out. See the Elections Outreach page for more information about how you can help spread the word.

If you have any questions for the candidates, please post them here. This is also a place for general discussion of the candidates and the upcoming elections. Fire away!

Best, Daniel

Yes the Candidate Forum was good but would have liked to have seen a larger turnout. If you notice half of those in attendance were the candidates and if indeed the council is to represent the community, well, we need more community.
Recommend we continue public announcements in the Capitol Hill Times and establish a regular meeting spot and date.

Also, would like to make a few suggestions.

1. A member inquired about keeping nominations open and I do not believe the announcement for officer application really made it to the newspapers and a resonable time for applications. There really should be a fair public posting for cadidates. I would really like the council to start off properly. Currently the bylaws would allow nominations to still be accepted and we can always defer the voting date as long as it is 30 day out from the nomination.
Would like to propose for the agenda at the next meeting for re-opening candidacy in a newspaper to fullfill our obligations of proper public notification.
Telephone polls and blogs are great but they are not technically and legally proper public notices.

2. Would also like to suggest to our nominated Secretary a location where there is no time contraint. It was a bit annoying that people had to listen to microphone testing. I think we owe it to the community to address concerns (even if we have to stay an extra half hour) and following the purpose of the committee as stated in they bylaws to investigate community issues.
Perhaps an open period in the agenda should be scheduled for members to ask questions and bring up concerns.
Consider Seattle Central College again? Its not perfect but it has large rooms and at least lights! :)

charlette, we can just ask to use the chac showroom (upstairs) next time…
…as to the candidates conversation, and similar to what i just posted to the steering committee yahoogroups site…

seems that we're already getting lost as to our priorities, and in the end, who or what the community council is really about.

why all this importance or emphasis given to a few so called elected officers?
you mentioned it before…it's about the larger community…

if a 'community council' is going to have any effect or real meaning on this hill it's not going to be about a few randomly elected folks changing anything, it's going to be about each one of us self-sELECTING ourselves at every opportunity we have, electing to show up at a meeting or gathering (and creating our own) to be that voice that we need to be.
each one of us ultimately holds the power over this new community body, the power of yay or nay, of the veto and then even ditching this, our latest capitol hill experiment in organizing, if it doesn't work out…
this last meeting was not just about listening to the voices of four new people getting elected but about us…we've got a whole lot more listening to do cut out for us here….
there are so many different ideas and opinions about how things ought to be done around here it's staggering,
our real work as a council is going to be about figuring out a truly representative way of capturing and hearing these voices…
let's not fall into any illusions about this election having a lot of importance, let's not waste too much time about it, let's just get on with getting the word out to a whole lot more people and then figuring out a REAL system to accommodate that, a REAL way to organize and then channel all these various, unique energies, perspectives and potential wisdom around here.
ok, so my 2 cents as to what's important if we want to change anything around here.
